Balcony Tomatoes 2026

This is an example grow journal to show what’s possible. Feel free to use this as inspiration for your own journal!

The Plan

Growing cherry tomatoes on my small apartment balcony. I’ve got about 4 hours of direct sunlight, so we’ll see how it goes. Using 5-gallon fabric pots with organic soil.

Variety: Sweet 100 Cherry Tomatoes Medium: Fox Farm Ocean Forest Containers: 2x 5-gallon fabric pots

Week 1 - March 15

Started seeds indoors under a cheap grow light. Planted 6 seeds, hoping for at least 2 good seedlings.

Week 3 - March 29

4 out of 6 seeds sprouted! The two strongest seedlings are about 3 inches tall now. Going to transplant to larger containers this weekend.

Week 6 - April 19

Moved them outside to the balcony. They seemed a bit shocked at first but perked up after a few days. Starting to see some real growth now.

Week 10 - May 17

First flowers! Little yellow blossoms appearing. I’ve been feeding with a tomato fertilizer every other week.

Week 14 - June 14

Tons of green tomatoes on the vine. The plants are about 3 feet tall now. Had to add some stakes for support.

Week 16 - June 28

First harvest! Got about 20 ripe cherry tomatoes. They taste amazing - way better than store bought.

Lessons Learned

  • 4 hours of sun is enough for tomatoes, but more would be better
  • Fabric pots dry out fast - water daily in summer
  • Should have started staking earlier
  • Definitely doing this again next year
