Nutrients are the essential elements that plants absorb through their roots (and to a lesser extent, their leaves) to fuel growth, flowering, and overall health. Understanding what nutrients a plant needs — and when — is one of the key skills in growing cannabis.
Macronutrients (N-P-K)
On most nutrient labels or packages, you’ll often see 3 numbers, like 10-10-10.
These numbers represent the three primary macronutrients used to feed plants: Nitrogen-Phosphorous-Potassium, often referred to as N-P-K (using the element’s periodic table abbreviation).

The ratio of these elements/nutrients for fertilizer changes based on the growth stage of the plants, as the plant’s needs shift.
- Seedling — Very little fertilizer needed. Most soils contain enough to sustain a young plant.
- Vegetative stage — Higher nitrogen (N) to support rapid leaf and stem growth. A ratio like 3-1-2 is common.
- Flowering stage — Lower nitrogen, higher phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) to support bud development. A ratio like 1-3-2 is typical.
- Late flower / flush — Many growers reduce or stop feeding in the final 1–2 weeks before harvest, and provide only water.
Secondary Macronutrients
These are needed in smaller quantities than N-P-K but are still essential:

Calcium and magnesium deficiencies are common enough that many growers supplement with a dedicated Cal-Mag product, especially in coco coir or reverse-osmosis water setups.
Micronutrients
Required in trace amounts, but deficiencies can still cause problems:
- Iron (Fe)
- Manganese (Mn)
- Zinc (Zn)
- Boron (B)
- Copper (Cu)
- Molybdenum (Mo)
- Chlorine (Cl)
Most complete fertilizer lines include these. Deficiencies in micronutrients are less common and usually point to a pH problem rather than a true lack of the element.
pH and Nutrient Availability
Nutrients are only available to the plant within a certain pH range. Even if the nutrients are present in the soil or solution, the plant cannot absorb them if the pH is wrong. This is called nutrient lockout.

A pH meter or pH test drops and pH-up/pH-down solutions are considered essential tools for any grower.
Organic vs. Synthetic
There are two broad approaches to feeding cannabis:
Organic
Organic nutrients come from natural sources — compost, worm castings, bone meal, bat guano, kelp, and similar amendments. Rather than feeding the plant directly, organic growing focuses on building a healthy soil ecosystem where microorganisms break down organic matter into plant-available nutrients. You may also see this referred to as “living soil”.
- Slower release, harder to overfeed
- Builds soil life over time
- Some consider it to produce better flavor
- Less precise control over exact nutrient ratios
Synthetic (Mineral)
Synthetic nutrients are manufactured salts dissolved in water. They provide nutrients in a form the plant can absorb immediately.
- Fast-acting and precisely measurable
- Easier to correct deficiencies quickly
- Can build up salt deposits in the medium over time
- Requires more attention to runoff and flushing
Some growers use a hybrid approach, combining amended soil with occasional liquid feeds.
Deficiency and Toxicity
When a plant is not getting the right amount of a nutrient, it shows visible symptoms:

Toxicity (Overfeeding)
Too much nutrient is just as harmful as too little. Common signs of overfeeding include:
- Nutrient burn — Brown, crispy tips on leaves, starting at the edges
- Dark green, clawed leaves — Often a sign of nitrogen excess
- Salt buildup — White crust on the surface of the soil or around drainage holes
The fix is usually to flush the medium with plain, pH-balanced water and then resume feeding at a lower dose.
Tips for Beginners
- Start low — Use half the manufacturer’s recommended dose and increase gradually.
- Watch the plant, not the calendar — Feed based on what the plant looks like, not on a rigid schedule.
- Check pH every time — Most problems that look like deficiencies are actually pH issues.
- Less is more — It is easier to fix an underfed plant than an overfed one.
